Acalypha hispida (Chenille Plant)

Life: Perennial, but will Freeze

Size: 6-12' high, 3-6' wide

Light: Full Sun

Water: Moist, with Good Drainage

Soil: Rich, acidic to slightly alkaline

A large, erect, sprawling tropical shrub. Potted plants will normally be smaller, but if protected over winter they may become quite large with time. It flowers intermittently all year, as long as conditions are favorable, with bright red, dense, fluffy catkins, eight to twenty inches long and an inch in diameter, velvety like a cat's tail. The cultivar "Alba" has creamy white catkins. They are freeze-sensitive and are normally kept in containers in Houston, overwintered indoors close to a sunny window, but can be planted as in-ground annuals during the summer. Be sure to keep an eye out for red spider when inside.
