Carpobrotus chilensis

Life: Perennial

Water: Average to Dry, Well Drained, Very Drought Tollerant Once Established

Soil: Poor and Sandy, Salt Tollerant

It has a spreading growth habit, forming large mats of thick, succulent green leaves that are 5" long and triangular in cross-section. The 3" flowers are magenta with a yellow throat and will be followed by reddish-brown, fig-shaped fruit, which gives rise to its common name of "Sea Fig". It is a good plant to grow along the coast, as it tollerates salt spray and can help conrol erosion.
