Lagenaria siceraria (Bird House Gourd)

Life: Annual

Size: 10-15' tall, 2-3' wide

Light: Full Sun

Water: Normal to Moist

Soil: Neutral to Acidic, Sandy Loam to Some Clay

Grown mostly for its fruit, a pear-shaped gourd up to a foot long that can be carved into decorative birdhouses or other fun objects. Dry them and remove the seeds first, and then craft your handiwork with ordinary tools. A small hole will invite birds such as wrens, while a larger hole can accomodate martins and the like. Be sure to drill some tiny drain holes in the bottom so that any rainwater that gets in doesn't stagnate and flood the nest. A summer crop, it requires a strong support for climbing to keep the gourds from rotting on the ground.
